“Total phosphate as P₂O₅” describes a reporting basis. It is not automatically the percentage of a single pure SHMP compound, and it cannot by itself predict performance in your process.

When comparing supplier documents, read the complete test-item name, units, reporting basis and method alongside the limit or measured result. Then check the other specification fields and your application requirements.
P₂O₅ is the chemical formula for phosphorus pentoxide. A result expressed “as P₂O₅” uses a phosphorus-pentoxide-equivalent reporting basis. It does not mean that the product is a bag of free phosphorus pentoxide, or directly state the mass percentage of a single SHMP molecule.
Commercial materials described as sodium polyphosphates can comprise mixtures. A historical European Commission description lists sodium hexametaphosphate among soluble sodium polyphosphate terminology and uses P₂O₅ content as an assay basis. That historical food-additive document does not establish the composition, certification or suitability of a Tairan industrial shipment.
A technical specification may list both total phosphate, as P₂O₅ and inactive phosphate, as P₂O₅. Treat them as separate test items. Ask for the applicable method and the precise definition of inactive phosphate before comparing documents or drawing conclusions about composition.
Subtracting a maximum inactive-phosphate limit from a minimum total-phosphate limit does not produce a measured “active content.” Even for measured values, confirm the method before treating their difference as a performance metric.
A specification sets requirements for a grade. A lot-specific certificate of analysis (COA), when available, reports tests and results associated with that lot. Read the column headings before comparing documents.
| Check | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Product identity | Do both documents refer to the same grade and intended use? |
| Test item and basis | Is the result total phosphate as P₂O₅, another basis, or a different test? |
| Specification | Is the number a minimum, maximum or range? |
| Batch result | Is there a measured result for the actual lot, and is the lot identified? |
| Method and conditions | Are the test method, sample basis and relevant solution conditions stated? |
A minimum limit and a measured batch result answer different questions. A general brochure is not a substitute for the documents supplied with an order.
Other fields may include water-insoluble matter, iron and pH. Check the unit, the substance measured, whether the figure is a limit or result, and the concentration and temperature of any test solution where stated.
The Tairan industrial SHMP product page lists total and inactive phosphate separately. Request the current TDS and applicable lot-specific COA for the offered grade; an older brochure is not proof of a current batch result.
No single specification number establishes a universal dosage, lower production cost or result in every water or formulation. Water composition, other ingredients, operating conditions and the full product specification all matter. Compare suitable grades on representative materials using a consistent method.
For ceramic applications, see the SHMP ceramic-slip testing guide. Its approach is application-specific, not a universal recipe.
Share the industrial application, destination, quantity and technical requirements. Ask for the applicable TDS and SDS, and confirm whether a lot-specific COA is available. For total or inactive phosphate, request the full test item, reporting basis and method.
Share your application and the specification you need.
